Director of Bands: James Hannah


Mr. Hannah’s concert and marching bands have consistently received first division ratings at the Texas University Interscholastic League. The Wind Ensemble has won several national music festival awards. The 2002 Full Symphony orchestra comprised, of the Wind Ensemble and PWSH five time String Honor group, was selected to perform at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Convention.

Mr. Hannah’s jazz bands have also won numerous ensemble and individual student awards. Hannah’s jazz band students have performed for several Grammy Award winning artists. These artists have included Wynton Marsalis, The Yellowjackets, Take Six, and Spyro Gyra.

Mr.  Hannah’s honors and professional memberships include: Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Mississippi Music Educators Association, Music Educators’ National Conference, Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Richland Archaeological Society and Richland Ballet Dance Theatre Company.

Mr. Hannah was selected for Who’s Who Among America Teacher (1994, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), Garland ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year (1994), Naaman Forest High School Teacher of the Year (1994), Outstanding Young Men of America (1986).

Mr. Hannah was a guard instructor, judge and performer for over twenty five years. His experience includes instructor with WGI finalist Final Analysis, Charon Regime, University of Texas at Arlington, University of North Texas and numerous high school around the country.

Mr. Hannah’s arts training has been fairly extensive. James studied conducting with Dr. Joe Barry Mullins, Dr. Kate Tamarkan, Dr. Jack Delaney, and Eugene Corporon; trombone with Larry Weed, Marta Hofarce, and John Kitzman; Voice with Virginia Dupuy; dance with Sally Johnson, Lilly Cabatu-Weiss, Marilyn Dewey, Sherry Mallard and Peter Kentes.  Mr. Hannah is presently a member of the Richland Dance Theatre.

In addition to being a band director, Mr. Hannah also served as the color guard instructor for The University of North Texas, The University of Texas at Arlington, and The University of Southern Mississippi. Mr. Hannah has also been a judge for the Gulf Coast Color Association and the North Texas Color Guard Association. His guards were frequent finalists at the WGI Regional and International competitions.

Mr. Hannah’s hobbies include traveling, yoga, Tai chi, dance, archaeology, and cycling.

Associate Band Director: Eric Petrinowitsch

Eric Petrinowitsch

Mr. Eric Petrinowitsch, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, is the Associate Band Director and Percussion Director at Plano West Senior High School in Plano, TX. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Texas with a B.M. in Music Education with a specialization in percussion and a minor in business.

Eric’s duties at Plano West Senior High School include directing the Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, Drumline, assisting with the Marching Band and coordinating the percussion program for the Plano West Cluster. Eric has been an active marching percussion arranger since 2007, writing for the Miamisburg High School Marching Band in Miamisburg, Ohio and Lakeview Centennial High School in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Prior to his appointment at Plano West, Eric was the Associate Band Director and Percussion Director at Lakeview Centennial High School in Garland, TX for 4 years. While at LCHS, the percussion program grew substantially and the Marching Band advanced to UIL Marching Area Finals for the first time in school history.

Eric has performed with the UNT Champion Indoor Drumline and the UNT 2 O’Clock Steel Band, the Metro Alliance Indoor Drumline, and the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps. Eric is currently a member of the Lone Star Wind Orchestra Percussion Ensemble based out of Richardson, TX, and is the drummer for the Dallas-based rock band, Abacu5. Eric is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association and the Percussive Arts Society.


Associate Band Director: Preston Pierce

Preston Pierce

Originally from Alice, Texas, Preston is an Associate Band Director at Plano West Senior High School in Plano, Texas. His duties include directing the Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, team teaching the Concert Band, assisting with the Marching Band, and teaching a section of Music Theory.

While teaching in Plano, Mr. Pierce has consistently had students make the TMEA All-State Jazz Band. In 2015 the Plano West Jazz Ensemble was selected as the 2016 TMEA Invited Jazz Ensemble.

Mr. Pierce previously served as Associate Band Director at Shepton High School in Plano, Texas. Prior to teaching in the Plano ISD, Mr. Pierce was an Associate Band Director in the Aubrey ISD. While in Aubrey, the High School’s Symphonic Band was named the 2010 2A TMEA Honor Band. In the same year they were finalists in the Texas UIL State Marching Band Competition for the second time in the school’s history.

In his first year of college Mr. Pierce attended Texas A&M Kingsville and was a member of Jazz Band 1 where they were awarded the prestigious Down Beat award for Best College Jazz Band. Mr. Pierce then transferred to the University of North Texas where he was a Jazz Studies and Music Education Major. While at UNT, he had the opportunity to study with Jim Riggs as well as serve as saxophone section leader for the Green Brigade Marching Band.

Prior to moving to the North Texas area, Mr. Pierce had the opportunity to play with Latin Jazz groups Ritmo Caribe and Latin Talk. He has also been fortunate to share the stage with Jazz Legends Bobby Shew, Chuchito Valdes, and the late Ed Shaughnessy. Mr. Pierce’s professional affiliations include TMEA, TBA, and TJEA.

During his free time, Mr. Pierce enjoys spending time with his wife, Melissa (Art Teacher at Shepton HS) and their two daughters, Madeline and Norah. He also enjoys watching sports, listening to live music, and salt water fishing.
